Kelly Ryan, a 12-year-old goalie from Chicago and avid hockey fan, made the seven-hour trip to Simcoe with his father Phil in order to learn from his idol Dwayne Roloson. But in April of 2010, Kelly was tragically killed near his home after being struck by a vehicle while on his bicycle.

Roloson Mason Goalie Schools had a trophy made for the family commemorating the young goalie, and another that will be awarded to a camper each year for dedication and hard work.

"Hopefully the students realize how good of a kid he was and how phenomenal of a person he was -- he was a great goalie, but as a person he was phenomenal," said Dwayne Roloson. "Every day, it was a highlight for him to come out here and it was a highlight for us to work with him."

Since its inception, the camp has given goalies someone to look up to and emulate. In Kelly Ryan's case, it was a chance to learn from his hockey hero.

"For me personally, it was devastation to hear what happened," said Roloson, " but at the same time it was a great honour to understand and realize a big part of his life was looking up to me and watching me play. It's unfortunate that things happen the way they do, but at the same time for me, I was honoured to be that person for him."

"We as role models have to do the right things... make sure we're good role models and good citizens to give these young kids a chance at life so they're not messing up. It's a lot of pressure, but at the same time, it's exciting and honourable to be that person."
